On the Blue Note stage, as part of the Jazz Top series, Kenny Garrett will present Kenny Garrett & Sounds from the Ancestors, based on the Grammy-nominated album of the same name. Garrett has held a special place in the history of modern jazz for years. As an alto saxophonist, composer and band leader for more than four decades, he has consistently developed his own musical language, remaining one of the most recognizable voices on the American jazz scene.
He began his career with the greatest legends of the genre, performing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the bands of Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw and Art Blakey, before becoming a member of Miles Davis's last band from 1986 to 1991. It was this period that established his position as one of the leading saxophonists of his generation.
The following years brought the development of his own activity and established Garrett's position as one of the most important leaders of contemporary jazz. The albums Black Hope, Songbook, Simply Said, Seeds from the Underground and Grammy Award-winning Sounds from the Ancestors show an artist who effortlessly combines the tradition of hard bop with the modern language of jazz, the influences of world music and his own recognizable style. For his album Pursuance: The Music of John Coltrane, he received DownBeat magazine's distinction for Jazz Album of the Year and was named Best Alto Saxophonist himself.
