During the 201st meeting of the Embassy Film Club we will present Ken Russell's film The Devil. A special screening in the restored version will be held on the occasion of the 55th anniversary of the film. The lecture before the session will be given and the discussion will be led by the club coordinator, Michał Bednarczyk.
For years, Devils have been cursed, censored, banned and officially condemned by the Vatican.
For the first time ever, an uncompromising, directorial version of the film will see the light of day, restored perfectly in 4K.
The film is based on the novel “Devils of Loudun” by Aldous Huxley, inspired by the real events of XXVII century France.
Richelieu broke the resistance of the Huguenots, the country is ruled by Louis XIII. Father Urbain Grandier is a Catholic splinter. His obsession is to seek faith through physical sensations — pleasure and pain. Grandier is the father of a considerable number of children and the object of the erotic obsessions of Jeanne, sister of the superior of the Ursuline Order. When a young priest openly violates celibacy and unceremoniously marries his mistress Madeline, it causes a scandal. Grandier's opponents get a crown argument for initiating action against him.
Michał Bednarczyk — cultural and film scholar, lecturer at the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Warsaw, coordinator of the Embassy, creator and coordinator of the Discussion Film Club “Amator” at the Amok Cinema in Gliwice, supervisor of the Scientific Society of Film Scientists “Kinotok”, author of the book “Persona deformata”.
