On October 20, 2026, the 200th meeting of the iconic Embassy Film Club will take place. On this occasion we will present one of the films that have shaped the history of cinema. Faust, directed by F. W. Murnaua, proves that horror is timeless. The work on the themes of Goethe's drama still impresses with its craftsmanship, keeping the audience in a devilish embrace throughout the screening. During a special event at the Kosmos Cinema, “Faust” will reveal an unprecedented face thanks to electronic music performed live by Rabbit On The Moon. In order to fully appreciate the heritage of this 100-year-old film, a lecture will be given before the screening by one of the most respected Polish film experts and an outstanding expert of German cinema: Prof. Andrzej Gwoczdź. The session will be followed by a traditional discussion with the audience. It is your emotions and thoughts that will make the Embassy Film Club a space for shared experiences for the 200th time.
About the event
The film “Faust” unfolds in two distinct parts. The first reflects folk legends: Archangel Michael (Werner Fuetterer) and Mephistopheles (Emil Jannings) enter into a pact according to which the devil will gain power over the earth if he manages to capture the soul of the scholar Faust (Gösta Ekman) and destroy all that is divine in it. In the second part of the film, faithful to the plot of Goethe's play, the drama of Margaret (Camilla Horn) takes center stage. Faust seduces an innocent young girl, making her pregnant.
F. W. Murnaua's film is a dark poetry of cinema ahead of its time. The classic of German expressionism developed its own visual language, which to this day inspires subsequent generations of creators. “Faust” was one of the most important bridges between painting and cinema, combining the symbolism of animated images with visionary techniques of film editing. The work of 1926 is a testament to the unusualness of film art and the unique beauty of the X Muse.
