After the success of Hayao Miyazaki's breakthrough film 'My Neighbor Totoro' (1988), Camera Film is ready with the director's sequel, the no less charming 'Kiki — the Little Witch' (1989), this time also aimed at the slightly older children (although the little ones can keep up!).
The main character is 13-year-old Kiki, who - as family tradition dictates - must break up from the comfort of home to learn as a witch. Joining the broomstick is a talking cat who witnesses the girl's first difficult attempt to break through in the witch business. When you are in a foreign city without any special attributes, money or a roof over your head, it can be a difficult business to make a career. A baker in the neighborhood happily accommodates Kiki and helps her start a courier service, where her broomstick comes in handy in more unforeseen manners.
The hand-drawn pictures alone are worth the ticket price, but as always at Miyazaki you also get a character-driven and heartwarming humanistic message in the luggage, in addition to a fantastically detailed pre-war Europe as a backdrop. Scandinavian street scenes are also included among the film's many locations. And of course, these are also experienced from a bird's eye view, for tradition Miyazaki excels in flights that will take everyone's breath away — both because of their beauty and their perilousness.
