About the event

With an interactive offering about creativity, self-expression and performance, the House of St. Laurent is adapting the format of the children's disco and inviting you to a Ballroom Special. An open costume workshop, a short presentation and a subsequent runway moment for everyone involved make ballroom culture tangible for children and families.

Ballroom culture emerged in New York in the 1960s and 1970s as a space created by African and Latin American trans and queer communities for visibility, exchange and artistic expression. To this day, she combines fashion, dance, music and performance into a lively cultural practice. A central aspect of ballroom culture is the presentation of outfits — where clothing, costumes, and accessories serve as forms of identity, imagination, and artistic expression.

Everyone is invited to come in extravagant outfits or bring them along. In the open costume workshop, accessories such as fans, masks and headdress are made from various materials. There is one ward for younger children and one for older children. Finally, everyone involved will have the opportunity to show off their outfits and creations on the runway and celebrate each other, with the support of members of the Ballroom community.

Celebrate together

Ballroom culture also thrives on loud music and powerful sounds. We therefore recommend hearing protection for noise-sensitive children. If possible, please bring it yourself. A limited number of hearing protectors can be borrowed on site.

Ballroom is a space created by and for people in the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly BIPoC people. With this children's disco, we would therefore like to invite BiPoC, queer and trans children and families in particular to get to know Ballroom, dance, try things out and celebrate together. At the same time, the children's disco is open to all children and their accompanying persons who would like to help shape this space with respect. With us, things can sparkle, and be extravagant. Please choose costumes that do not represent or imitate the culture, religion or identity of other people.
