Primary school teacher Maria (Saoirse Ronan) tries by all means to inspire and support her class of ten-year-olds. But there is a single, particularly chaotic and unpredictable student who always throws lessons out of balance. As her professional future is increasingly at stake and the child's behavior is getting worse and worse, Maria makes several disastrous wrong decisions. As a result, she accidentally takes the troublemaker home and locks it in the cellar. Mary is trying to repair the situation, but when the class suddenly thrives and both her colleagues and parents are impressed by the positive changes, there seems to be no easy way out of her dilemma.
