“Second Life” — winner of the audience award at the Venice Film Festival — is a portrait of a mature woman with optimism and serenity, played by Carmen Maura (“Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown”, “Volver”).
María Ángeles has been living in a sunny apartment in the heart of Moroccan Tangier for forty years. It is a place that remembers her love, daily rituals and her whole life written in walls, furniture and small gestures. When she is forced to leave her home, she cannot come to terms with it — because home is not just an address, but a part of her identity. What initially seems like a painful necessity, however, will unexpectedly become a new beginning. In the life of Maria Ángeles there will be a place both for a new circle of friends and for unexpected love.
The new film by Maryam Touzani (“Turquoise Dress”) is a moving and winged story about attachment to a place, about a mature life without giving up on herself and about female independence that knows no age. On screen, Carmen Maura, icon of Almodóvar's films, impresses, creating one of the most magnetic and energetic roles of recent years - full of humor, stubbornness and tenderness. “Second Life” is a cinema gentle, sunny and close to the viewer. A story about how sometimes to save yourself you have to fight for your home. And that it's never too late to start over.
