“The True Story of Tamara Lempicka” is a moving, visually dazzling documentary about the life and work of one of the most iconic painters of the 20th century.
This is the story of an extraordinary woman, a master of self-creation, who has repeatedly redefined herself, creating ever new, extraordinary biographies. A woman who embodies courage, independence and an uncompromising pursuit of creative freedom. The film takes viewers through the avant-garde environment of Paris in the 1920s and the successive stages of Lempicka's artistic reinvention on different continents.
With a groundbreaking discovery of documents, including a birth certificate and baptism certificate, the film reveals for the first time — so meticulously hidden for years — the artist's true name, origin and identity.
The story is enriched by never-before-published home recordings on 8mm tape, archival materials and exclusive interviews. The image of one of the most influential women of the 20th century is painted by members of the artist's family, experts at Sotheby's — the oldest and one of the largest auction houses in the world — art historians and curators of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.
“The True Story of Tamara Lempicka” is also a story about a triumphant return to the canon and auction records. One of Lempicka's works was recently sold for more than $21.1 million, which is the third highest price ever paid for a contemporary artist's work.
“The True Story of Tamara Lempicka” is an inspiring portrait of an artist who was ahead of her era. She created in a world that did not accept female artists, and yet she became recognizable, adored and even sought after. It broke stereotypes and opened the door to future generations of creators.
