About the event

Kinski 100! : Fitzcarraldo [OmU] [English with German Subt.] Federal Republic 1982, directed by Werner Herzog with Klaus Kinski, Claudia Cardinale, José Lewgoy, 158 min

EN

A film that moves mountains. This is a project entirely to the taste of the eccentric director Werner Herzog.

That's why the Munich-based director refused to be dissuaded from realising his exhilaratingly photographed jungle epic “Fitzcarraldo” in 1981, despite almost insurmountable problems.

In His Fourth Collaboration with His Favourite Actor Klaus Kinski, Herzog depicts the story of a great dream in grandiose images.

The fact that “Fitzcarraldo” was completed at all in view of the production history is a cinematic miracle. However, the four-year endeavor paid off for everyone involved. “Fitzcarraldo” is masterful cinema, a visual work of art and perhaps the last great adventure of German film.

Iquitos around 1900: After a Failed Railway Project, Brian Sweeney Fitzgerald (Klaus Kinski), known as Fitzcarraldo, is already planning his next coup. He wants to build an Opera House in the Middle of the Jungle. But he has no more money and turns to his girlfriend, the brothel owner Molly (Claudia Cardinale). She advises him to buy a seemingly worthless piece of land that is inaccessible. There are 14 million rubber trees on the land, which he could exploit industrially.

To do this, he first has to get there, so he buys an old Steamship and wants to be dragged over a mountain by muscle power by wild Indians. (filmstarts.de)
