Devils

United Kingdom 1971, 111′

directed by Ken Russell

Cast: Oliver Reed, Vanessa Redgrave, Michael Gothard, Gemma Jones, Murray Melvin

The film is based on the novel “Devils of Loudun” by Aldous Huxley, inspired by the real events of XXVII century France.

Richelieu broke the resistance of the Huguenots, the country is ruled by Louis XIII. Father Urbain Grandier is a Catholic splinter. His obsession is to seek faith through physical sensations — pleasure and pain. Grandier is the father of a considerable number of children and the object of the erotic obsessions of Jeanne, sister of the superior of the Ursuline Order. When a young priest openly violates celibacy and unceremoniously marries his mistress Madeline, it causes a scandal. Grandier's opponents get a crown argument for initiating action against him.

The premiere screening of the restored and remastered version took place at this year's Cannes Film Festival!
