Curse

One of Stanisław Wyspiański's most poignant and courageous works. Inspired by the ancient tragedy, “The Curse” has remained a drama for more than a hundred years that raises questions about responsibility, guilt, community and the power of collective emotions.

By setting the action in the realities of the Galician countryside, Wyspiański created a story that goes far beyond the historical or customary framework. In a world where religion, popular beliefs and the inevitability of fate intersect, the drama of an individual entangled in the mechanisms of social judgment unfolds. It is the combination of realism and the universal dimension of tragedy that makes “The Curse” one of the most extraordinary works in the history of Polish dramaturgy.

The drama, which, due to its subject matter, was not staged during the author's lifetime, fascinates to this day with the power of theatrical language and ambiguity. Wyspiański, drawing on classical tradition and Polish experience, created a work open to further readings — still provocative to conversation and retaining extraordinary relevance.

The new production of Teatr Nowy will be another meeting with one of the most outstanding texts of Polish literature and theatre.
