Paweł Klecki, a composer born in Łódź, died 53 years ago, but still has not received due popularity. Hardly anyone knows that in the years 1915-1919 he played in the Łódź Symphony Orchestra — the predecessor of the Łódź Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. His achievements as a conductor and composer remain poorly known in Poland (he left symphonies, chamber works, songs). Fortunately, the Bacewicz String Quartet — a band whose members are associated with musical institutions in Łódź (philharmonic, opera, academy) — decided to record all four string quartets of this composer on record. These works, created over two decades, illustrate the evolution of his musical language: from late Romanticism to modernism. Of particular interest is the unfinished 4th String Quartet from 1942, with a bold approach to tonality, which was carefully edited for the needs of the recording. All Klecki quartets retain their traditional form, but attract attention with their rich emotionality. As Ewa Kowalska-Zać writes, Klecki treated string quartets “as a form of expression that, with the help of a communicative convention anchored in tradition, can perfectly serve to establish an agreement with the listener”.
