At a time when art was almost exclusively the domain of men, could a woman gain recognition as an outstanding painter? Sofonisba Anguissola proved that talent, determination and courage can break down social barriers. During the next meeting in the series “Women of Art, Women's Art” we will learn the extraordinary story of one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance. We will look at her portraits full of subtle emotions, psychological depth and extraordinary ability to capture the personalities of the people depicted. We will learn how Sofonisba gained recognition in European courts, how she became a painter associated with the court of King Philip II of Spain, and why her work became an inspiration to subsequent generations of female artists.
The series “Women of Art, Women's Art” is a journey through the history of the work of extraordinary women whose talent, independence and artistic sensitivity have changed the face of art over the centuries.
