This month we invite you to symbolically celebrate the anniversary of the opening of the new permanent exhibition “Ways of Seeing. Collection of the Museum of Art in Łódź”. As part of the event, we invite you to the tenth tour of the series “Collection step by step”, dedicated to the next chapters of the exhibition and to listen to the soundscape “Ways of Hearing” by Bartosz Nowicki.
Step-by-step collection. Year-round series of tours through the “Ways of Seeing” — chapter “Outside the City”. Guided tour of Jakub Gawkowski with the guest participation of Diana Lelonek.
The meeting will take place as part of the 14th edition of the Festival of Culture without Barriers and will be available with the participation of a translator of Polish Sign Language (PJM).
Exhibition “Ways of Seeing. Collection of the Museum of Art in Lodz” is a multi-threaded story about the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, divided into thirteen thematic chapters. The collections of the Museum of Art in Łódź allow us to trace how artists approached the subject of vision and its cultural, social and cognitive determinations.
The October meeting will be dedicated to the “Beyond the City” chapter, which looks at the changing ways landscape is represented and understood. The works presented here show the tensions between nature and culture, industrial development and environmental degradation, and the use of nature and the need to protect it. A special place is occupied by artistic responses to environmental changes, the development of ecological awareness and the search for alternative ways of thinking about the relationship of man with nature.
The chapter will be guided by one of the curators of the exhibition and the head of the Department of Modern Art — Jakub Gawkowski. The guest of the meeting will be the artist Diana Lelonek, whose work “Tortulla muralis on main dial from a home electronic device” (2016) is on display. Diana Lelonek is a visual artist who in her practice studies the relationship between man and other species and the influence of processes of overproduction and exploitation of the environment on the world around us. In her artistic work, she uses, among others, photography, video, found objects and organic matter, working at the intersection of art, science and activism.
“Collection step by step” is a series of tours of the new permanent exhibition of the Art Museum collection, based on returns to the same exhibition — each time viewed from a different perspective. Each meeting will be devoted to a different chapter of the exhibition and other works and issues.
This is not a one-off tour.
It's a year-round journey through the collection.
Every month, one step further and deeper. Every month, a different point of view.
IN ADDITION
The meeting will be complemented by a soundscape reproduced in the common space on the 1st floor of m2, prepared by Bartosz Nowicki based on recordings made in the exhibition space. The composition will allow you to experience the exhibition from an auditory perspective, bringing out the relationship between the sounds of the works, the architecture of the museum and the sounds of its daily functioning. The recording thus becomes an attempt to capture the invisible, audio layer of the exhibition - present both in the sounds of the works and in the noises, reverberations, steps, conversations or the work of installations and museum equipment.
