Step-by-step collection. Year-round series of guided tours through the “Ways of Seeing” with live audio description.

We invite you to another tour of the exhibition “Ways of seeing. Collection of the Museum of Art in Łódź.” This is the eleventh meeting in the series of tours “Collection step by step”, devoted to the next chapters of the exposition. During the November meeting, we will focus on the part “Multiple portrait”, presented on the third floor of sq.m. Exceptionally - this month - we will meet on Sunday. The meeting will begin with a discussion with the artist, which will take place at the PURO Hotel.

Exhibition “Ways of Seeing. Collection of the Museum of Art in Lodz” is a multi-threaded story about the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, divided into thirteen thematic chapters. The collections of the Museum of Art in Łódź allow us to trace how artists approached the subject of vision and its cultural, social and cognitive determinations.

The November tour will be devoted to the chapter “The Multiple Portrait”, which looks at ways of representing identity and attempts to reach the inner world of man — his desires, fears, dreams and unconsciousness. The collected works show that the portrait not only fixes the image, but also shapes it, becoming a tool of self-knowledge and a way of communicating what often escapes unambiguous definitions.

The chapter will be guided by one of the curators of the exhibition and the head of the Department of Modern Art — Jakub Gawkowski. The guest of the meeting will be the artist Cezary Poniatowski, whose work “Burrow” (2020) is on display. The artist gained recognition as the author of paintings with poster, graphic expression and sparing colors. In 2013 he won the Eugeniusz Geppert Competition, receiving one of the most important distinctions for young Polish painters. Years later, he abandoned painting in favor of sculptural work, creating spatial forms and site-specific installations. Cezary Poniatowski creates works in which ordinary materials take on a personal and psychological weight. He is interested in how everyday objects can reflect internal states — tension, isolation, displacement.

The November meeting will begin at 12:00 with a discussion with Cezary Poniatowski at the PURO Hotel (16 Ogrodowa Street), led by Jakub Gawkowski. Then at 14:00 we invite you to a tour of the chapter “Multiple portrait” at the exhibition “Ways of seeing” in ms² (19 Ogrodowa Street). Both events are separate parts of the program that can be attended independently of each other.

“Collection step by step” is a series of tours of the new permanent exhibition of the Art Museum collection, based on returns to the same exhibition — each time viewed from a different perspective. Each meeting will be devoted to a different chapter of the exhibition and other works and issues.

This is not a one-time tour. It's a year-round journey through the collection. Every month, one step further and deeper. Every month, a different point of view.
