Compose! Creation of field composition and graphic score. Workshops

And you can start composing! We invite you to music workshops combining different activities: sound walk, field recordings, creation of a graphic score and composition practices. Participants do not need to have musical training. They will be able to record their own interpretation of the sound material using a simple system of signs and rules, which they will become familiar with during the class.

The most important element of the meeting will be the transition from listening to creation. After the theoretical introduction, the participants will make a recording of the environment — field recordings — and then translate the acquired material into graphic language, in order to finally convert the recording into sound organized in time and space. As a result, a short field composition will be created — a piece created from the sounds of a specific place — the Wesoła district, shaped by group compositional decisions of the participants.

The aim of the course is to sensitize to the sound environment and to show that composing can begin with listening, observation and experimentation, rather than with knowledge of music theory. The role and importance of musical education is not denied, but the workshops will prove that there is also another path to creating music. During the classes, participants will experience in a practical way the basic concepts of music: time, tempo, rise and silence, pause or repetition. Classes will also allow you to change the way you perceive the daily environment. The sound of a car, footsteps or other sound events cease to be just background, noise, and become a compositional material.

At the end of the workshop, participants will receive an audio file of the composition created during the class.

The classes will be led by Jędrzej Siwek — sound artist, composer, educator, creator of contemporary, electronic and electroacoustic music.

The workshop is designed for people from 18 years of age.

The number of places is limited.

Classes will last 5 hours with a break (45 minutes).

Participants in the workshop are asked to have their own charged smartphone.
