In 19th century Poland, which remained under siege, music and art acquired special importance. After the failed November uprising, many outstanding artists, led by Mickiewicz, Słowacki and Chopin, found themselves in exile. Those who remained in the country increasingly took on the role of creators-socialists, treating art as a way to sustain community, educate society, and fill the space left by liquidated cultural institutions.
One of them was Stanisław Moniuszko — the hero of the next concert in the series. The renovator of Polish opera was creating at a time when music could be more than just an artistic expression. Like Ignacy Kraszewski or Matejko, Moniuszko saw art as a tool for influencing society. His work grew out of Polish tradition, history and everyday life, and at the same time responded to the needs of the audience living in a reality devoid of their own state.
During the concert we will look at the musical legacy of Stanisław Moniuszko, placing it in the broad context of 19th century Poland. It will be an opportunity to look at his work not only through the prism of music, but also the role that the composer played in the cultural and social life of his era.
