Ludwig van Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, Op. 62 is a musical tale full of dramatic tension about the inner conflict of man. It was created in 1807 and refers to the tragedy of Heinrich Joseph von Collin, depicting the fate of the Roman chieftain Coriolan. Violent chords, a nervous rhythm and a resolute main theme convey his anger, strength and determination. They are contrasted with lyrical passages, suggesting hesitation and longing. The music gradually loses momentum and calms down, leading to a tragic finale — without triumph, but with a sense of resignation and defeat.
Wojciech Kilar's music can create a whole world in a few sounds — evoking the era, the character of the characters and the atmosphere of the story. The cavalry march from the Chronicle of Love Accidents evokes the pre-war climate of Poland: it is full of elegance, nostalgia and lightness, and at the same time has the rhythm and momentum characteristic of the march. Waltz from the Promised Land is music full of brilliance and splendor, but beneath the surface of dance grace lies the anxiety and irony of the world of great ambition, money and industrial Lodz. Mazur z Zemsty goes back to the Polish noble tradition — it is lively, rhythmic and full of humor, and at the same time stylized as the music of the former Republic of Poland. On the other hand, Mr. Tadeusz — the suite from 1999 is one of Kilar's most recognizable film works. The composer combined Polish folklore, noble tradition and romantic nostalgia. Polonaise, Masurian and lyrical themes create a musical picture of a lost world — full of beauty, memories and longing for the homeland.
