About the event

Is it possible to experience music even more deeply when we stop relying on sight? On 15 October at 19.00, the Wodzisława Cultural Centre invites you to an unusual event — “Concert in the Dark” performed by the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Daehwan Kim.

“Concerts in the Dark” is an original proposal by Adam Wesołowski, composer and director of the Silesian Philharmonic. It's a unique experience that challenges artists and allows audiences to explore music in a unique, in-depth way.

During the concert, some of the songs will sound with the lights completely turned off. Listeners will also be able to put on elegant blindfolds and immerse themselves in the music, receiving it without the participation of sight. A particular challenge for the musicians will be to perform part of the program from memory — an extraordinary rehearsal for the orchestra and a unique experience for the audience.

The event will be an opportunity to focus on sounds, emotions and musical imagination. This is a proposal that can interest both classical music lovers and people looking for new, unusual artistic experiences.

The program will include works by composers who have experienced vision loss: Joaquín Rodrigo (“Concierto de Aranjuez” — fragments in preparation for orchestra, performed in the dark) and Johann Sebastian Bach (“Brandenburg Concerto” for orchestra and multimedia). There will also be a “Moon Sonata” by Ludwig van Beethoven — a composer who struggled with progressive hearing loss — in preparation for orchestra. The program will complement the “Symphony of Water” for orchestra and multimedia by Adam Wesołowski.

Ticket information and support

Tickets for the concert cost 20 PLN for each participant.

Blind and visually impaired persons who need assistance in getting to the WCK or moving around the building can contact the WCK staff in advance (tel. 32 455 48 55). We will be happy to help, among others, in reaching the hall, locker room or toilet. It is also possible to make an appointment with the employee at a fixed location, e.g. at a nearby stop.

The event is part of the project “WCK — Open Cultural Space” The concert is organized as part of the project “WCK — Open Cultural Space”, implemented by the Wodzisław Cultural Center. The project aims to increase the accessibility of institutions and create a cultural offer that takes into account the needs of people with special needs.

WCK wants to be an open place where everyone can participate in culture. Therefore, an important element of the project is the consultation of the activities with the recipients and the search for solutions that facilitate the use of the offer of the institution.

Blind and visually impaired people, as well as people with disabilities, are among the groups that rarely participate in events organized by the Wodzisław Cultural Center. That is why “Concert in the Dark” is prepared primarily with them in mind — as an activity aimed at increasing the accessibility of the cultural offer of WCK and creating a space for full participation in culture. The event is also intended to become the beginning of wider cooperation and conversations with people with visual disabilities and their representative organizations to better recognize their needs and take them into account when planning further initiatives.

The project is implemented within the framework of the program “Universal Design of Culture — Accessibility in Cultural Institutions”, financed by the European Funds for Social Development 2021-2027. The program is implemented by the National Cultural Center in partnership with the State Fund for the Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities.
