There are moments in music when beauty does not mean peace. On the contrary, it is born from tension, from longing, from the premonition that something is about to end or is about to begin. This special space of emotions will be opened by the festival concert NEW START — NEW STARS, organized on the occasion of the inauguration of the 2026/2027 academic year.
Franz Schubert and his String Quartet in D minor “Death and the Girl” is a music in which youth meets inevitability. The inspiration for Schubert was a song about the meeting of a young girl with Death. Instead of horror, however, there is something surprising - gentleness. Death speaks softly, almost like someone who has come to bring comfort. In the quartet, this theme returns as a pulsating rhythm, but there is much more behind it: fear, rebellion, tenderness and an extraordinary desire to live.
Ernest Chausson speaks a completely different language, but with a similar intensity. His Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet Op. 21 is a separate work and difficult to categorize unequivocally. Violin, piano and quartet do not play against each other here - they conduct a conversation in which roles are constantly changing. Once the music is almost a whisper, a moment later it gains momentum to return to intimacy again.
