The protagonist of the film embarks on a journey that does not lead through specific places, but through memory, imagination and the experiences of a lifetime. He meets characters from his past, returns to the events that shaped him, and tries to understand the meaning of his own choices. “How far from here, how close” is a film-essay. Personal, reflective and formally daring, in which the boundaries between reality, dream and memory are constantly blurred. Konwicki creates a multi-layered narrative full of symbols, visual associations and emotional returns, inviting the viewer into an intimate experience of memory. This cinema is challenging, but extremely rewarding — allowing you to stop for a moment and look at your own life from a distance. A film that does not give simple answers, but provokes to ask important questions about time, transience and identity.

The film is the crowning achievement of Tadeusz Konwicki's original cinema — personal, balancing on the border between waking and dreaming, full of recurring motifs known from his literature. The cast includes actors related to his work, including Edmund Fetting and Ewa Krzyżewska, and the whole is enriched by suggestive images and special effects by Stanisław Latałła. Appreciated at festivals (among others in Łagów and San Remo), the film could not be presented in Cannes due to the decision of the authorities, which only underlines its rebellious character.
