Babelsberg and Hollywood — these are names that have a legendary sound in the film world, since the early days of cinema. In Babelsberg, just outside Berlin, large silent film productions were made in the 1920s, for which effective music in a symphonic sound was often composed, including the monumental film Metropolis based on the screenplay by Thea von Harbou and directed by Fritz Lang.
Exactly 100 years after the completion and premiere of this cinematic vision of the future, excerpts from the impressive film music by Gottfried Huppertz can be heard. The program also includes parts from the soundtracks of Gone with the Wind, a famous Hollywood production from 1939 with music by Max Steiner and a symphonic suite for the no less spectacular film The Adventures of Robin Hood, composed by Erich Wolfgang Korngold, who significantly shaped the history of Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1950s with his numerous film scores.
