“Roots” — an unusual journey to the sources of Chełm legends

“Roots” is a show inspired by the history, legends and identity of the Chełm Region. The show takes viewers on an emotional journey into the world of old traditions, family secrets and places that have shaped the unique character of Chełm for generations. It was created on the motives of the work of Longin Jan Okon, and presents local legends in a modern, theatrical form.

The main character of the story is twelve-year-old Marie, who comes to Chełm to get to know her father's hometown better. He does not suppose that this journey will become the beginning of an extraordinary adventure. Under the streets and hills of the city, she discovers not only the famous chalk corridors, but also stories that allow her to better understand the family's past and find her own roots.

On the stage, stories about three oaks, the White Bear and the secrets hidden under the city come to life. Dynamic action, original music, choreography and colorful characters create a show that will interest both younger and adult viewers.

The author of the script and the director of the play is Marcin Wąsowski. The story he created combines local heritage with a universal story of the search for one's own identity, the discovery of one's family past and the meaning of the place from which one comes. Sława Czarnota is responsible for the scenography. The musical layer is enriched by songs by Bartłomiej Kazimierczak, arranged by Mikołaj Kołodziejczyk. The choreography is in charge of Ewelina Drzał, and the project coordinator is Barbara Szarwiło.

The performance stars: Hania Rudzka, Mirosław Majewski, Sławoj Czarnota, Zbigniew Moskal, Elżbieta Rojek, Milena Olchowska, Katarzyna Klimczak, Barbara Szarwiło, Anna Bieńkowska and Andrzej Kuczura. The dance layer of the performance includes Oliwia Wojnarowska, Tosia Sałek, Zuzia Olszewska and Martyna Nieska.

“Roots” is more than a theatrical tale of local legends. It is a meeting with the history of the region, which, thanks to the imagination of the creators, acquires a new dimension. The show reminds us that the past is not just a record of past events — it lives in stories, family memories and places with which we are connected. It is a story about discovering ourselves, the power of family ties and the search for answers to the question of where we come from and what shapes us.
