The year 1945. For the former prisoners of one of the cassettes in Germany, the war is not completely over — as the so-called dippies, they are still stuck behind the wires, this time guarded by the Americans, without the constant threat of death, but still not sufficiently fed. The visit of the bishop, the Mass and the reconstruction of the Battle of Grunwald heat up the disputes waged by the Poles.

About the event

Landscape after the battle directed by Andrzej Wajda, Poland, 1970

Fiction, Drama, Psychological

The year 1945. For the former prisoners of one of the cassettes in Germany, the war is not completely over — as the so-called dippies, they are still stuck behind the wires, this time guarded by the Americans, without the constant threat of death, but still not sufficiently fed. The visit of the bishop, the Mass and the reconstruction of the Battle of Grunwald heat up the disputes waged by the Poles.

The camp's outsider, the poet Tadeusz, seemingly burned out by many years of living in a cacete, does not take part in them, in fact hiding a great sensitivity under the mask of cynicism. The empty rituals of worship of this sensitivity will not save us, but love for the refugee from Poland, the Jewish woman Nina, met here — perhaps yes.

A film about love and the affairs of Poles — with Baczyński, Norwid and Ash and Diamond in the background. A different look at the camp theme, the question of the effects of a bad past and analogies with the present. A caricature show from Grunwald as a metaphor for life in Poland of the Mocharov era and the most beautiful love scene in Wajda cinema (Nina trying to kiss the camp number from Tadeusz's forearm). Hot disputes, outstanding acting and Golden Duck for film of the year.

Continuation of Andrzej Wajda's film review on the occasion of his 100th birthday — Poland through Wajda's eyes.
