King Roger

One of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century and at the same time the most frequently performed Polish opera title on the world stage. Opera, oratory and mystery at the same time.

The idea of writing an opera by Szymanowski and Iwaszkiewicz originated in Elizavetgrad and Odessa at the end of World War I, just after the October Revolution. Why today, a century after those events, pursue King Roger? As then, so today, war is taking its toll in the name of ideas and beliefs, and in this very place, in Ukraine.

Opera speaks directly of the illusion of all that is temporal. In contrast, the focus is on the “pure heart” of man. We are on guard at the dying king. The Good Shepherd comes to him in a bad way. The real world and delusions intersect. The shepherd helps Roger see the essence of human nature.
