Kate “Ma” Barker drags four sons into a criminal raid across the American South. Bank robberies are quickly giving way to kidnappings for ransom, and family ties are increasingly intertwined with violence and madness. When a gang kidnaps a wealthy businessman, Ma must decide how far he will go in the name of loyalty. Roger Corman based “Bloody Mommy” on the story of the Barker gang, creating a brutal but not devoid of humor crime story. Shelley Winters and young Robert De Niro starred here in an uncompromising tale of crime and family ties. The film entered the anti-establishment cinema of the late 1960s and 1970s, stripping gangster history from Hollywood romanticism.
