“The Book of Return” is a performance that is a continuation of the artistic research of the Przedmieście Theater in the area of the broadly understood theme of memory. When in 2013 we decided to make the play “Dybuk Rzeszowski” based on the legendary drama of Szymon An-ski, we did not expect that the metaphysics of this story would return to us many times over the years. Today, once again, but in a different way, we wish to plunge into the current of this history and recall the names of the inhabitants of old Rzeszów and other towns of Galicia. However, this time we want to abandon the typically literary narrative in order to give voice to those who have been forgotten... On this journey we will be accompanied by our great-grandparents, whose fates are woven into a common story. The events and places we evoke form a mosaic of experiences we once heard about in childhood.
The script of the performance, which borders on performance and visual arts, will be woven from authentic stories — memories, audio recordings, extracts from archives, historical materials, literary texts, but also private collections. An important element of the project will be live music (accordion, violin), which is a bridge of memory between the world of the past and the present.
