About the event

About Culture Night at the Royal Casting Collection

Come along behind otherwise closed doors and get an exclusive insight into the Royal Casting Collection. On the occasion of Culture Night, we open the doors to the old warehouse on Copenhagen Harbour and to the more than 2,000 plaster sculptures that hide here. Explore and be enchanted by pagan gods, mythical creatures and ancient heroes in one of Europe's largest and grandest casting collections.

Among other things, take a guided tour by museum inspector Henrik Holm, who is in charge of the cast collection, when he takes both the sculptures and their place of residence, the West Indian Warehouse, under loving and critical care. You can also indulge in plaster and threads of tow in tonight's creative workshop — or immerse yourself in the art of drawing in front of the sculptures.

During the evening you will also be able to experience selected casts being brought to life when students from the Department of Classical Archaeology take us around the old warehouse. Throughout the evening they will give performances in “ekphrasis” — the fine art of bringing a work of art to life in a poetic and lively way that both contains myths, narratives and draws threads into our contemporary times.

The Royal Casting Collection x Classical Archaeology

Experience selected casts being brought to life when students from the Department of Classical Archaeology take us around the old warehouse. Throughout the evening they will give performances in “ekphrasis” — the fine art of bringing a work of art to life in a poetic and lively way that both contains myths, narratives and draws threads into our contemporary times. The performances will be in both Danish and English.

We meet at the meeting place on the ground floor

6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Open plaster workshop: Make your own plaster sculpture!

Try your hand at art and create your own plaster figure. Together with the skilled assistants of the plasterer, we fill plaster into molds and create imaginative creatures with sticky plaster and threads of tow.

In the Workshop

6pm-00.00

Drawing workshop in the middle of art

About The Royal Casting Collection

The Royal Casting Collection is part of SMK, but the more than 2,000 castings that make up the collection can be found in the West Indian Warehouse at the port in Toldbodgade 40, Copenhagen K. Originally the warehouse was built to accommodate coffee. But in 1984, the Royal Casting Collection moved in and turned the warehouse into exhibition space. Here you can explore among casts of the main works of sculptural art. Discover pagan gods, religious motifs and ancient heroes, and explore one of Europe's largest and grandest casting collections.
