Josef Kaiser (1910—1991) is one of the most influential architects of the GDR. Between 1950 and 1984, he was significantly involved in numerous, mostly representative state buildings. His modern designs on Berlin's Karl-Marx-Allee, which were regarded as an expression of the cultural identity of the GDR, received international attention. Many of its buildings, including the iconic Kino International, are now listed buildings. For the first time, the exhibition presents life and work using drawings, collages, photographs, films and models and highlights areas of political and aesthetic tension. Contemporary positions open up new perspectives on his heritage as part of German-German architectural history.
