Lovis Corinth's significance for modernity is hard to overestimate. Even during his lifetime, the virtuoso painter (1858—1925) was one of the most famous figures on the Berlin art scene. In 1900 he moved from Munich to the imperial capital. “It only started in Berlin,” Corinth is said to have commented on his success story on the Spree. The exhibition focuses on Corinth's career and his influence on the city's art scene, but also on his private environment. Less well-known topics also show how modern the artist painted, lived and thought: Corinth's painting school, in which he primarily taught women, and his work for the Berlin theatre.
