The square is a musical performance in which the actors are accompanied by a live string quartet — commenting on and accompanying the dialogue of the main characters.
Two guys, friends doomed to each other in an indefinite, confined space. The discomfort of sharing it, compounded by the pressure of a threat from everywhere, does not remain without influence on the psychological condition of the protagonists. They communicate mainly with gestures and glances, and words that have lost their original function return only in songs, scroll like cliches from a past life.
The play Square is a grotesque story about a friendly relationship, the background of which becomes an incomprehensible war. A story about the loneliness of two young people in front of each other and the world, about the impossibility of dialogue at a time when the basic signs of communication are exhausted, because every moment the hope of salvation is extinguished. There is no chance of returning to the reality of the disaster — the possibility of going back to the time before being locked in the mental cage of the SQUARE. However, the heroes stubbornly believe in the possibility of changing the reality that binds and touches them so strongly, they try to maintain appearances, rituals of everyday life. They laboriously build them day after day by referring to their common past, to familiar patterns of behavior, to the power that binds their relationship together.
Music becomes the only way to express emotions and feelings, protects the mind from the final breakdown, connects fragments of a broken picture of the world. It allows you to forget that the safe haven involuntarily became a cell, and the man who has been so close until now gradually becomes more and more tormenting, incomprehensible and even alien.
Can music save us from ourselves?
What is the recipe for confrontations of war and young people?
What is the recipe for finding a place in a world that displaces us at every turn? How do you deal with growing fear and lack of hope?
What happens to people in a place from which there is no way out?
This time-lapse story attempts to reinterpret words such as friendship and true responsibility for the other person. Words that slowly languish in the mouths of citizens of safe, free and democratic countries. Maybe it's worth remembering them?
THE NARRATION OF THE PERFORMANCE IS SONGS FROM THE REPERTOIRE OF Kultu, Lao Che, Króla, Nosowska, Maanamu and other contemporary Polish artists.
The script for SQUARE was created at the end of 2019. We did not know then what would happen, how our reality would be transformed, at what dramatic turning point in history our world would be. How terribly the foundations of peace and stability of states will be undermined. We haven't changed anything in the show since.
The premiere of the play took place during the 41st Review of Actor's Song in Wrocław (2021). The performance won the Toucan of the OFF Audience during this festival.
There are two of them; one firm, sharp, confident; the other more gentle, clumsy, a little shy. They're both you and me. They are anyone and nobody. Condemned to each other, they learn to talk with each other, to communicate; to live. There is a strong bond between the actors, which translates into the quality of the performance; they play with form, gesture and sound, are funny and touching. In addition to this, they are of course great acting and vocally delightful, energetic and charismatic. [...] The advantage of this performance is the music played live, which makes it authentic in every way, because every element of it is created in front of the audience.
