About the event

The Ronald Harwood Quartet (1999) is one of the most famous plays by the famous British playwright, novelist and film screenwriter, winner of the Oscar in 2002 for the best adapted screenplay by Pianist Roman Polanski.

The story takes place in a retirement home for veteran artists, where former stage partners from the brilliant quartet from the fourth act of Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto opera meet. One of the quartet couples was once married...

Once famous, young and beautiful, today they are seventy-year-olds full of grit and mutual funny malice, recalling bygone times with affection and undisguised love. With the last throw on the tape, they try to recreate the Verdi quartet, which in the final of the play will sound like a challenge thrown to the world by former virtuosos of opera singing. And for once it turns out that true art is immortal.

The quartet was and is an acting show for the four stars of the “old date” of each theater, in the Ateneum represented by Magda Zawadzka, Marzena Trybała/Sylwia Zmitrowicz and two Krzysztof, Gosztyła and Tyniec.

Actors bring out differences in character, temperament, feeling
humor, the way of being of their characters, creating a colorful procession of petty
events, tensions, emotions unfolded between outbursts of resentment, anger to enviable
harmony and kindness. Their characters breathe truth and even though it is “only” a comedy, they can be liked.

The quartet is a display of the artistic artistry of the magnificent,
experienced actors of the Athenaeum Theater. There are no better or worse in the show
role. Each of the Big Four
moves and delights, putting his whole heart into the game. Wojciech Adamczyk perfectly
He matched the artists to the individual characters. Magdalena Zawadzka seems
created for the role of the charming and hilarious Cissy Robson, Marzena Trybała
brilliantly portrays a somewhat mannered primadonna, Jean Horton, Krzysztof Gosztyła delight and
a tasteful creation by Reginald Paget, and Krzysztof Tyniec plays to tears in the role
unscrupulous pick-up artist, Wilf Bond.

as if it were more than just another play for the actors to play. They play
not naturalistically, they play roles more than they embody everyone

Making a good comedy about aging is not easy. Especially one that likes and
seniors, and younger viewers. Harwood succeeded, and Adamczyk directed
her with class. The art is served in a spicy sauce of slightly pinchy, ironic
and distanced from reality with a sense of humor. Very British,
I like that. Jokes are served by brilliantly constructed characters, and
the cast hits the high C.
