The Silesian Quartet came into contact with the music of Aleksander Tansman at the very beginning of his artistic path. In the author's series of concerts, artists return to their important and inspiring work. Concerts under the slogan Aleksander Tansman in France create a coherent story about the composer born in Łódź, who found his artistic home in the environment of Parisian intellectuals of the early 20th century. Together with the invited guests, the Silesian Quartet discovers the richness of Tansman's chamber music and looks at other composers belonging to his French circle.

About the event

The Silesian Quartet came into contact with the music of Aleksander Tansman at the very beginning of his artistic path. In the author's series of concerts, artists return to their important and inspiring work. Concerts under the slogan Aleksander Tansman in France create a coherent story about the composer born in Łódź, who found his artistic home in the environment of Parisian intellectuals of the early 20th century. Together with the invited guests, the Silesian Quartet discovers the richness of Tansman's chamber music and looks at other composers belonging to his French circle.

The second concert of the cycle will be opened by Tansman's Third String Quartet from 1925. In this light, neoclassical and at the same time personal work, the composer does not shy away from Polish inspirations — Scherzo takes the form of a stylized mazurka. However, the focus of the program is set by wind instruments, especially close to Tansman. In Musique pour clarinette et quatuor à cordes, his last chamber work, the clarinet presents its full potential: from singing to virtuoso cadence in the middle part. Even more clearly, this instrument takes on the role of guide in Musique à six. Written in 1977, the piece refers to Mozart's serenades — music that was supposed to please performers and listeners. Echoes of Tansman's earlier works, Chopin's work and klezmer sounds also return here. In the finale of the concert in Joachim Mendelson's Piano Quintet, the oboe will come to the fore. Tansman met a Polish composer of Jewish origin in Paris and introduced him to the publisher Max Eschig. Thanks to this knowledge, the quintet was published in print and is today one of only two surviving works by Mendelson; the rest of the composer's work, who died during the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, has been lost.
