A masterpiece of Venetian Baroque opera, composed by one of its leading protagonists. Created and brought to the stage almost exactly in the middle of the 17th century, Francesco Cavalli's La Calisto is characterized by musical richness and exceptional sharpness of the contours of the characters, as well as a sophisticated libretto full of serious and funny situations and characters.
The storylines are complex, almost labyrinthine, surprising the scene changes and twists of events. The most powerful of all passions, love, is the driving force to which all agents are subject in trials and tribulations, be they gods, natural beings or people. Director Stefan Herheim will stage this colorful kaleidoscope of words and sounds in the form of a “baroque science fiction” aesthetic, in all the thematic diversity and colors that are inherent in this opera, at the end of which is a starry sky. And Christina Pluhar will unleash the musical magic with her ensemble L'Arpeggiata.
