With La forza del destino, Verdi is breaking new ground. The title already refers to the paradigm shift, which does not take up the name of a figure or a historical event, but conjures up the “power of fate” in general. Accordingly, the composer wrote an idea drama which negotiates the fate of entire social groups and peoples. Following on from this, Frank Castorf creates links to the Spanish Civil War of the 20th century and the fight against fascism in the Second World War in his only opera direction in Berlin and interweaves the individual fates of the characters with the horrors of colonial history. In the production by the legendary Frank Castorf, the “Triangle of Destiny” is played this time by an internationally sought-after trio of Guanqun Yu, Pavel Yankovsky and house debutant Luciano Ganci.
