La Grazia

An Italian president and widower are facing the final, decisive decisions of his career - stemming from the moral dilemmas surrounding euthanasia and pardoning convicted murderers. At the same time, his private life is shaken by the revelations about his late wife's infidelity - which shed new light on their life together during his final years in power. Toni Servillo (Sorrentino's star — not least in 'The Great Beauty') shines in a memorable, tragicomic role as President of Italy in a world where propriety and responsibility are still passable coins. that seems far removed from today's political reality. Paolo Sorrentino's alternately hilarious and gripping tale of power, loneliness and doubt opened the Venice Film Festival, where it quite deservedly took home Toni Servillo the Best Actor award.
