Paolo Sorrentino's film is about power, responsibility and the very human need for forgiveness.
“La Grazia” touches on topics extremely close to the modern world: the responsibility of those in power, the limits of the law, the right to a second chance and whether justice can exist without empathy. Sorrentino does not give easy answers. Instead, it shows how complicated decisions can be when there is a concrete human history behind the rules and a man with his past, his emotions, his loss and his own conscience.
Toni Servillo stars as Italy's fictional president, Mariano De Santis, facing one of the toughest decisions of his career at the end of his term. On his desk are the cases of two people sentenced to life imprisonment. The presidential law of clemency gives him the opportunity to change their fate, but any decision means questioning the limits of justice, guilt and mercy.
