Ella Road in her debut play in the social fiction genre, nominated in 2019 for the prestigious Olivier Award, charts a dark vision of the world in an undefined future, born of the serial dystopia “Black Mirror”. Genetic research is so advanced that, based on an individual's DNA, everyone is assigned a rating — an assessment that translates into their social status, opportunities to get a better job or find a life partner. The main criterion for assessing individuals becomes not ethnicity or class origin, but a specific cocktail of genes. The processes of excluding the weaker, however, remain strangely familiar.
