About the event

Lambert, a Berlin-based pianist, composer and producer, known for his distinctive Sardinian mask, will perform at Blue Note with material from his new album “I AM NOT LAMBERT”. His music is distinguished by subtle piano parts, jazz freedom, electronics and a sense of song melody. On his ninth album, he gives such an important role to vocals for the first time, opening another chapter in his work.

“I AM NOT LAMBERT” grows out of the artist's belief that his music has always been close to the song. This time, this fascination takes a more direct form — alongside the voice of Lambert himself, sometimes processed by the vocoder, the album features Kat Frankie, Dekker and Rob Goodwin from The Slow Show. Intimate arrangements enrich the sounds of cellos, wind instruments, guitars and drums, behind which the pianist himself sits in several pieces.

The sound of the album is composed of jazz phrasing, the warm sound of Rhodes, intimate arrangements and soul harmonies. Inspirations include the work of Bright Eyes, Fiona Apple and the film compositions of Jon Brion, as well as jazz, which Lambert listened to long before his debut under this pseudonym. Along with gentle, sparing pieces, there are more rhythmic compositions with extensive instrumental parts.

Since his debut in 2014, Lambert has been playing with his own image and questions about identity. The mask, which was originally supposed to allow him to leave the past behind, over time became his hallmark. However, the artist approaches this story with humor and distance, as well as attempts to close his music in rigid categories.

On the cover of “I AM NOT LAMBERT” he takes off his mask, but remains true to what drives his work from the beginning — curiosity, the search for melody and the pleasure of playing. The Blue Note concert will be an opportunity to hear where this search is taking him.
