Facilities: ground floor
Cycle: XXXVI lecture as part of the lecture series “Saved from oblivion. Carnivorous encounters with culture and art.”
Richly decorated stalls, open pews, separate chapels and even balconies - the interiors of churches in the modern era were densely filled with seating that took various forms. The appearance and location of the seats testified to the prestige and social status of the people occupying them.
During the November lecture we will look at the preserved elements of the seats from the furnishings of the old church of St. John. Archival photographs will help us to imagine unpreserved stalls and chapels and to recreate their arrangement in the interior. All this in search of an answer to the question: “Where did the faithful sit at St. John's?”
Speaker: Agnieszka Drygiel - art historian, cultural educator and promoter of heritage by profession and passion. Guide to St John's Centre. Since 2018, she has been taking care of monuments in the Baltic Centre of Culture. Author of a permanent educational offer for children and young people dedicated to both historical sites of NCKGdańsk. She took part in the adventure of returning historic equipment to the Gothic St John's Centre and in an equally interesting process of producing exhibitions dedicated to its restoration and adaptation into a cultural centre.
Coordinator: Iwona Berent, Head of the Department for the Protection of Monuments of the NCK Technical service, recording of the lecture: Adam Wośko/Andrzej Lawdański Communication: Marta Korga-Bistram
