A trio of friends and artists – Nicólas Pereda’s frequent collaborators Luisa Pardo, Lázaro Gabino Rodriguez, and Francisco Barreiro – who met at a writing workshop years ago navigate a tangle of envy, admiration, insecurity, and desire as they fall into a complicated yet curiously limp love triangle, further strained by the fact that all three are auditioning for the same low-budget film.
A minimalist comedy of infidelity transforms into a surreal, fantastical inquiry into ambition, art-making, and the instability of friendship, in which even a fairytale dream sequence – deftly fabulated by Pereda with his characteristic wryness – seems unable to conjure realities beyond those we can already see.
Lazaro at Night, dir. Nicólas Pereda, Mexico/Canada 2024, Spanish with English subtitles, 76 min.
