Le brasier ardent

The directorial work of one of the biggest stars of the silent movie era, a “masterful mix of Surrealism, Freud and Dada” (Jay Weissberg), is peppered with unusual ideas and experiments, a wildly mixed plot and an eccentric set design. The detective “Z” (Ivan Mosjoukine) is hired by the jealous husband of a woman who has already been visited by the woman in her dreams after reading his autobiography. Jean Renoir wrote in 1938: “One day I saw LE BRASIER ARDENT at the Colisée. The audience howled and whistled, shocked by a movie that was so different from what they were used to. I was in ecstasy... I decided to give up my job in the ceramic industry to try making films. ”
