The screening on 22 November will be followed by an online Q&A with the director Huang Ya-li, moderated by Dr. Kiki Yu (Queen Mary). In Japanese with English subtitles.
Le Moulin is Huang Ya-li’s first feature and winner of the Best Documentary award at the Golden Horse Awards. Blending archival footage, reenactments, poetry and sound, Huang constructs an evocative film essay that revisits a little-known chapter of Taiwan’s cultural history.
In 1930s Taiwan, under Japanese colonial rule, a group of young poets founded the Le Moulin Poetry Society. Inspired by Western modernism and French Surrealism, they sought to forge a new poetic language amid cultural assimilation and colonial domination. Through their writings, lives and encounters with foreign influences, the film resurrects a forgotten generation of artists negotiating identity, creativity and resistance in a turbulent era.
