Lech Janerka — Sleep, Sleep Intelligence

The first full-length documentary film dedicated to one of the most original creators of Polish music — Lech Janerce — is an attempt to capture an artist who has consistently gone his own way for more than four decades, remaining outside the mainstream and at the same time exerting a huge influence on it.

Instead of a classic biography, the creators propose a poetic journey between wakefulness and sleep. The starting point is the language of Janerka — full of neologisms, abbreviations of thought and philosophical reflections — in which the themes of sleep, dreaming and falling asleep most often return. It is they that define the structure of the film: a hypnotic story in which the real places of the protagonist's life intersect with the imaginary spaces.

The narrator is Janerka himself, and the only person telling his story remains his wife, Bożena Janerka. Their voices guide the viewer through a world made up of sounds, words and images — complemented by archives, fragments of concerts and productions and animations inspired by the artist's work.

The film recalls the phenomenon of the band Klaus Mitffoch, whose debut album is considered one of the most important records in the history of Polish rock, and follows Janerka's further path as a soloist, author of ten albums and two volumes of poetry. A special place is occupied by his return after an eighteen-year hiatus — the album “Gypsum casting of the Falsificate” (2023), awarded five Fryderyk Awards, which confirmed his unchanging artistic strength.

“Lech Janerka — sleep, sleep intelligentsia” is not only a portrait of an outstanding musician, but also a reflection on language, memory and transformations of Polish reality in recent decades. This is a film about an artist who “doesn't need anything” and yet still finds new ways to tell about the world — quietly, perversely, and with disturbing precision.
