Lessons from Horses — an exhibition of paintings by Kasia Bukowska

Kasia Bukowska is a Polish-American artist and horse trainer, born in Los Angeles. It was her love for these animals that made her come to Poland from California — thanks to one unique horse, she made a decision that completely changed the direction of her life.

A few years later came another experience that opened a new path for her. Illness and the associated long months spent in bed robbed her of the opportunity to ride horses and have daily contact with animals. Then she began to paint them. Initially, it was both an exercise for weakened fingers and joints and a way to stay close to the world, which has always been an extremely important part of her life.

What was born in one of the most difficult moments has evolved over time into an artistic path that has been going on for more than a decade. Today, Katarzyna Bukowska creates mainly acrylic paintings on canvas, using intense color, movement and expressive gesture. He works mainly with brushes, but in some works he also uses his hands and fingers, reaching for the technique of finger painting.

Horses remain the central protagonists of her work, but the artist's paintings are not just portraits of them. They become a story about the experiences, emotions and discoveries that the relationship between man and animal brings. About trust and courage, freedom and control, strength and tenderness, boundaries, connection and change.

The exhibition “Lessons from Horses” arises from a simple and at the same time extremely personal question: what can horses teach us about ourselves?

The horse is not pretending. It responds to what is happening here and now — to tension and calm, pressure and space, uncertainty and trust. Sometimes his reaction becomes a mirror in which we can see something that we cannot yet name in ourselves.

The presented images were created under the influence of specific meetings and experiences, but also emotions, questions and breakthrough moments. Each of them is an attempt to capture not only the physicality and energy of the horse, but also what happens between him and the man.

“Lessons from Horses” is not just a story about animals.

It's a story about ourselves—about what we can learn when we really start listening.
