Detroit-based Lelo continues his breakout streak in 2026, closing out the summer with a series of new releases and a sold-out tour that culminated in his hometown. His latest single “Like Sunday” is a catchy, sample-based track with a music video that came out after April's collaboration “Yoppenheimer (Remix)” with Joey Bada$$ and the January single “Dice Roll”. Both releases maintained the momentum started by his double mixtape Mastiff and Pink Tiles, released as a two-disc project contrasting his signature “New Detroit” sound with a more experimental ghettotech-inspired twist on his work.

The Mastiff era took Lelo far beyond his hometown. He made his Rolling Loud debut in Orlando in May, performed alongside Don Toliver at Summerfest in Milwaukee, and was named Billboard's Young Generation Hip-Hop Artist of the Month in June 2026. This was in addition to previous publications and acknowledgements from Pitchfork, Highsnobiety, The FADER and Vice. His signature Mastiff: Pink Tiles Tour with Groovepill has grown from an initially announced 13 concerts to a sold-out tour of 15 cities. The final was held on July 31 at St. Andrew's Hall in Detroit. It was a symbolic return to his hometown, during which Lelo combined songs from Mastiff, such as “Monetize”, “Hoodrich” and “Down to Earth”, with fan favorite numbers from his debut mixtape. The artist has already announced a new full-length project, telling Metro Times that he is returning to the studio with the hope of releasing a “big album” at the end of this year or at the beginning of 2027.

The path of Lelo, a native of Detroit, was consistent, not abrupt. He introduced himself to the public thanks to the 2024 Nightingale project, in which he coined the term “New Detroit” in an outro. He then broke through nationally with the melodic single “No Contempt”, fueled by popularity on TikTok, which secured him a presence on the Billboard charts. He closed 2024 with two more EPs, LifeAfterDogShit and When It's Over, before releasing a string of singles in 2025, including “Main Event” using Sade samples and his first career guest appearance, “On The Wall” with Detroit-based Babyface Ray. All of this set the stage for his debut album New Detroit. The project received a 7.8 rating from Pitchfork and made it to its annual list of best rap albums, and also became the basis of a sold-out, four-city tour.

What still distinguishes Lelo is his reluctance to rely on guest appearances or momentary trends. He surpassed a million listeners a month before releasing at least one song with a guest verse. His sound grows out of Detroit street rap, but also extends to ghettotech, house and characteristic Detroit techno textures of the 80s. His work has been recognized by musicians such as Earl Sweatshirt, Pi'erre Bourne, LUCKI and Brent Faiyaz. With a single “Like Sunday” fitting into the intense pace of his releases in 2026, a sold-out tour behind him and a full album on the horizon, Lelo remains one of the American Midwest's most-watched young voices — and an artist who could soon become a star of the national format.
