Leonard Elschenbroich cello ; Alexei Grynyuk piano

‘In Leonard Elschenbroich and Alexei Grynyuk’s hands, these sonatas’ staggering invention is impossible to ignore,’ wrote Gramophone in its review of the duo’s recording of Beethoven’s sonatas for cello and piano. They open their programme this morning with the eloquent lyricism and abrupt dramatic contrasts of the Cello Sonata in A Op. 69, placing it in company with one of Rachmaninov’s finest works, by turns elegiac and tragic in mood.
