Two Beethoven masterpieces showing the artistic path taken by their creator in just a quarter of a century. The string quartet in C minor belongs to the first set of quartets, classical in form, continuing the line drawn by Haydn and Mozart. Beethoven reinforces this form with tension-building contrasts of far greater dramatic weight. They are favored by the key in C minor — the same one in which he wrote the Sonata “Pathetic” or the later Fifth Symphony.
In the Quartet in C minor, Beethoven extends the old four-part form into seven parts performed without interruption. It is no longer the creation of musical moods with the help of old methods enriched by one's own invention. It is an attempt to enter with reflection into the depths of the musical message. The principle becomes the inner play of the listener's emotions, not just his habits. A new era of thinking about music begins.
