Alain Resnais, F, I 1961, 94' DF
Last year in Marienbad is rightly considered one of the most beautiful films of the early 1960s. A man tells a woman that he met her here in Mariánské Lázně a year ago and how he longed for her over the year. A fleeting moment in a flirtation that you don't even know whether it actually took place. The woman can't remember.
An elegant film whose costumes were designed by Coco Chanel, shot by innovative director Alain Resnais with screenwriter Alain Robbe-Grillet. In the end, the woman will follow the man. Such a beautiful and yet fleeting moment — not even the director and screenwriter agreed on the plot. Resnais said that the man and the woman had actually met, while Robbe-Grillet was convinced that the man only wanted to persuade the woman to meet, just as you say to a woman you want to get acquainted with “I know you from somewhere.”
