Astor Piazzolla's tango, George Gershwin's jazz energy and Glenn Miller's swing vibe will come together during the concert on February 19. The Silesian Chamber Orchestra will be conducted by Radosław Droń, and the soloists of the concert will be clarinetist Piotr Lato and accordionist and composer Maciej Zimka. The program of the evening will combine a variety of musical traditions of the 20th century - from the American swing and Broadway lightness of Gershwin to the Argentine tango nuevo Piazzolla.
The concert will open George Gershwin's Swanee, a hit that brought the composer his first great popularity and remains a symbol of American entertainment music of the 1920s. It will be accompanied by the energetic I Got Rhythm, in which Gershwin combines jazz rhythm with classical form with characteristic lightness.
The swinging vibe will bring Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade one of the most recognizable tunes of the big-band era. The characteristic soft sound and nostalgic atmosphere of this piece are known today to almost every lover of jazz and film music.
A special place in the program will be occupied by the music of Astor Piazzolla, a composer who revolutionized traditional Argentine tango, creating his own style known as tango nuevo. In his music, classical tango meets jazz, contemporary music and improvisation, creating an emotional, intense musical language. The audience will hear, among others, the famous Oblivion - one of Piazzolla's most lyrical and nostalgic works - and Libertango, a work symbolizing the composer's artistic freedom, whose title was formed from the combination of the words “libertad” and “tango”. Concerto Hommage à Liège Piazzolli, in turn, is a composition written for bandoneon and orchestra on the occasion of the anniversary of the Belgian city of Liège. The work perfectly reflects the composer's characteristic style: sharp rhythms, expressive contrasts and emotional tension built between lyricism and the exuberant energy of tango.
The evening will be completed by Sholem-alekhem, rov Feidman! Béli Kovácsa — a piece full of humor and virtuosity inspired by the style of play of the famous clarinetist Giora Feidman and Por una Cabeza by Carlos Gardel, tango, which remains one of the most recognizable symbols of Argentine music.
